Charitable giving is an individual thing, not easily transformed into a shared experience. Achieving a family consensus around giving is essential to successful family philanthropy. All individuals in the family should be provided with resources to give to charity as they see fit. A family foundation will enhance the process of family philanthropy by creating an entity in which all family members can play an important decision-making role. I view a private family foundation as complicated, and not required for effective family philanthropy. The experience of shared philanthropy provides an opportunity to use actions, not just words to teach children what is important.
